BLURB:
Welcome to Perfection, California. The year is 1961. The picket fences are white, the lawns are green, and the sprinklers are shiny and new… and Benji the 18-year-old Boy Scout is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime.
Yes, Benji dreams of getting his hands on the coveted Happy Beaver Badge, a challenge that requires him to hike up to Mount Pleasant, venture through the Rainbow Forest, cross Lake Serenity and reach the old abandoned Forestfire Station.
But as Benji sets off, looking forward to experiencing the beauty of nature… nature isn’t exactly as welcoming as Benji had hoped. From evil chipmunks to stinky skunks, Benji’s adventure quickly turns into a quest for survival. Luckily for Benji, he meets handsome Mack the Lumberjack who’s willing to give the Boy Scout a helping hand—
—in more ways than one!
EXCERPT:
It was a good thing the people of Perfection had sprinklers, thought eighteen-year-old Benji the Boy Scout as he strolled down the street whistling in tune with the blue jays. After all, how else could the townsfolk keep their lawns so green, their roses so red, and their bird baths so full when there’s never a cloud in the sky?
“What a wonderful day for a mountain hike.” Benji smiled to himself.
But this was no ordinary day, and the hike he was about to do was no ordinary hike. No sir, Benji was about to undergo one of the greatest challenges in his Scout career—to hike up Mount Pleasant, venture through Rainbow Forest, cross Lake Serenity and reach the old Forest Fire Lookout in order to receive the coveted Happy Beaver Badge. It would take all his strength and stamina, all his courage and problem-solving skills, and all his resourcefulness, but Benji knew he was up to it.
As he walked down the street, he adjusted his backpack with a snap of a strap and tilted his hat back to get a better view of that sky so blue, which allowed a tuft of short blond hair to pop out from under the wide rim. Benji straightened his scarf and thought about how much he loved wearing his uniform, even though a recent growth spurt had made his short-sleeved shirt and khaki shorts rather snug. Still, every time he pulled his socks high and tightened his woggle, Benji felt a certain rush of pride that only Boy Scouts know.
That’s when he heard it—the distressed cry of a neighbor.
“Somebody please help me! Please help!”
Benji raced along a row of white picket fences, heading in the direction of the voice until he reached the front gate to Mrs. Delaney’s house.
Mrs. Delaney was standing under her Crab Apple tree, gazing frantically up into its blossoming branches, her white-knuckled hands clutching at her Jackie Kennedy hairdo. As Benji opened the gate, she turned and let out a sigh of relief.
“Oh Benji, thank goodness you heard me! Snuffles is stuck up the tree and can’t get down.”
At the mention of his name, Mrs. Delaney’s fluffy white cat Snuffles let out a frightened meow from a branch. Benji hurried up to the tree, took off his hat and looked up at the cat.
“Don’t worry, Snuffles! I’ll get you down.”
Mrs. Delaney let out a thrilled quiver. “Oh thank you, Benji.” She eyed his strapping young body up and down, pleasantly surprised. “My goodness. When did you become so… heroic?”
Benji blushed a little. “I’m a Boy Scout, Mrs. Delaney. I’m not heroic. I’m just prepared.”
“For what?”
“Anything,” he winked.
With all his strength, he hoisted himself up, gripping onto a lower branch and digging the toe of his hiking boots into the trunk. Mrs. Delaney noticed his snug shorts become even snugger as he stretched his legs and clenched his buttocks.
“Oh, here, let me give you a hand,” she offered, placing both palms flat on his ass cheeks in a token effort to give him a boost.
“Thanks.”
“My pleasure,” Mrs. Delaney said. And there was that quiver again.
As Benji climbed up through the tree, Snuffles excitedly paced up and down his branch, purring. “Hey there, Snuffles! Time to get you down, huh?”
Taking the cat into his caring yet confident grip, Benji began to descend to the applause of Mrs. Delaney.
“Oh, Benji! Thank you so much.”
“You’re more than welcome,” Benji said after jumping down onto the ground and handing the purring cat back to his owner. “I love all animals. Speaking of which, I’d better hurry. I expect to see lots of cute little critters on my hike up Mount Pleasant.”
“Oh my, yes,” Mrs. Delaney agreed. “And what a lovely day for it. Just be careful you don’t trip on a log and sprain an ankle.”
Benji scooped up his hat. “Oh don’t you worry, Mrs. Delaney, I’ll keep my wits about me. I’m determined to come home to another Scout badge.” With an optimistic grin and a Boy Scout salute, he turned to leave, calling over his shoulder, “I’m gonna make that Happy Beaver mine, just you wait and see.”
Mrs. Delaney clutched her pussy tighter. “Oh, I wish,” she breathed with one last sigh.
A few houses down the street, Benji heard the whimper of a puppy and the cry of a panicked woman. “Somebody please help! Come quick, somebody help!”
Benji raced along the street to find Mrs. Winden in her gardening clothes and rubber gloves trying desperately to fight off her out-of-control hose that had managed to tangle her white Labrador. The young dog was whimpering and howling as the hose continued to wrap itself around the poor pooch.
“Oh my!” Benji exclaimed, leaping the picket fence and dashing across the yard.
He pulled off his backpack and hurled his hat across the yard, and with all his courage, he dived onto the wet lawn, sliding up to the distressed dog and tackling the squirting hose.
“Jeepers!” He shouted as water sprayed in his face. “Golly!” He shrieked as it doused his shirt and drenched his tight little shorts. “Goodness gracious!” He coughed and spluttered as the jetting water rushed up his nose.
Nevertheless, he continued to wrestle with the swirling, snaking hose, at the same time using all his problem-solving skills to figure out how to free the tangled dog. He unlooped a slithering coil from around the Lab’s hind leg. He unraveled the gushing hose from around the dog’s waist. He threaded a length of it through a twisting spiral and suddenly the delighted pooch bounded free, barking and jumping and shaking off the water.
“Oh Rex, you’re all right!” Mrs. Winden cried excitedly, only now thinking to turn the hose off at the tap before gazing admiringly at the soaked scout on her lawn.
Wet from head to toe, Benji climbed to his feet while Rex ran happy circles around him.
“Oh my,” Mrs. Winden breathed, her hands distractedly fumbling with the buttons on her summer dress as she stared absently at the young man’s dripping crotch. “Thank you so much, Benji. I had no idea how tall you’ve grown… or how gallant you’ve become.”
Benji fought off another blush. “Oh, I’m not gallant, Mrs. Winden. Just prepared.”
“For what?”
“Anything.”
“Oh, that’s good to hear,” Mrs. Winden smiled. “Would you like to come inside and I’ll help you off with those wet clothes before you catch cold?”
“Gosh, thanks for the offer, but I’m in a rush to get my hands on that Happy Beaver.”
“You want to do it with your clothes on?” Mrs. Winden let out with a nervous shudder, touching her hand to her hair to make sure it was perfectly in place… for now. “Well, don’t let me stop you.”
“Thanks,” Benji said. And with that he slid on his backpack, put on his hat and continued on his way down the street, leaving Mrs. Winden to utter a single, disappointed—
“Oh.”
It wasn’t long before Benji heard another upset cry. Although this time there was no fear or panic in the voice, but rather sadness and grief.
“Why, Mommy? Why did they have to die?”
Benji turned the corner of the street to see little Jimmy Johnson sitting on the curb outside his parents’ house, his mom sitting beside him with her arm around his shoulders. Jimmy had a fishbowl in his lap and was quickly increasing the water level with his tears.
“Hey there, little guy,” Benji said, sitting on the other side of Jimmy in his damp uniform. “What’s the matter?”
Mrs. Johnson looked over the top of her son to Benji and whispered, “Jimmy’s Sea Monkeys have all gone to sleep.”
“They’re not sleeping,” Jimmy wept. “They’re dead! They’re not moving!”
“Jeepers, that doesn’t sound very good,” Benji said. “Do you mind if I take a look?”
Jimmy sniffed and handed the bowl to Benji with a pout. “See for yourself.”
Benji held the fishbowl up to the light and looked into the sloshing water, unable to see anything but the pebbles on the bottom of the bowl and a little miniature shipwreck inside. He looked over at Mrs. Johnson and said in a barely audible hush, “I don’t see anything.”
Mrs. Johnson shook her head, covered her son’s ears and said in an even softer voice, “They’re Sea Monkeys. He bought them with a comic book coupon. Everyone knows they don’t actually exist.”
“Oh, I see,” Benji replied before digging deep into his resourceful mind and tapping Jimmy on the shoulder as his mother took her hands away from the boy’s ears.
“They’re dead, aren’t they?” Jimmy asked, looking up at Benji, his eyes big blue pools of tears.
“Are you kidding? Take a look!”
Benji pointed to the bowl and began tracing the underwater acrobatics of an invisible swimming creature. His eyes lit up, and so did Jimmy’s.
“I see them now. Look at ‘em go!”
“You betcha, kiddo,” Benji nodded, eyes darting between Jimmy and the nothing inside the fishbowl. “They’re doing little loop-de-loops through tiny hula-hoops!”
“I see them! I really do! I thought they were dead!”
Benji shook his head. “No, they weren’t dead. They were just sad.”
“Sad?” Jimmy’s smile faded. “How come?”
“Because they’re out-growing their fishbowl so fast. They need something bigger to swim in.”
“Like the kitchen sink?” Jimmy asked hopefully.
“Bigger,” Benji said.
“Maybe the bath tub?” Jimmy turned to his mother and added, “You won’t get any trouble getting me in the bath if my Sea Monkeys are with me!”
“Bigger,” Benji shook his head.
“What’s bigger than a bath?” Jimmy asked, scratching his head.
“If we set them free, I promise they’ll find a home big enough for all them to swim and play and grow up big and strong, some place where they’ll all live happily ever after.”
“I’ll miss them,” little Jimmy sighed. “But if you say it’ll make them happy… then that makes me happy.”
“I promise,” Benji said. And without another word he tipped the fishbowl upside-down and let the water gush along the gutter and down a nearby drain.
“Bye-bye Sea Monkeys,” Jimmy waved, a little sadly, before excitedly turning to his mother and asking, “Can I get a pet snake?”
“Why don’t you ask your father when he gets home,” Mrs. Johnson said. “Now go play with your toys in the backyard.”
Jimmy nodded and raced away, leaving Mrs. Johnson smiling at Benji. “He’s out playing tennis at the club till noon,” she said, adding by way of explanation, “Mr. Johnson, that is.”
“I love tennis!
“Yes. I imagine you’re rather… athletic.”
“I hope so. I’m after a Happy Beaver.”

FEATURED AUTHOR
What do you know about Carol Lynne? She's talented, smart, sexy as hell? Yep, yep, yep. You probably also know that she's written an obscene number of books that can make even the most prolific author blush with inadequacy. Seriously.
Since she's our featured author, I decided to do a little research.
In Carol's words:
I’m completely boring. I spend my days juggling two young children and my writing career. You’re just as likely to either catch me writing a steamy love scene or scrubbing jelly out of the carpet.
Besides writing, my biggest passion is reading. I have a lot of authors I follow (no not in the stalking sense), but Sean Michaels, B.A. Tortuga, J.M. Snyder and Chris Owen have to be my all-time favorites.
Here are some unusual facts about me:
I drink gallons of coffee every day, but I much prefer instant. I catch all kinds of flack for this from my family and friends. Even though I only drink instant, I am very picky about which brand I buy. It must be Taster’s Choice or nothing.
I love country music, but can’t stand to have music playing in my house. Therefore, I don’t even own a stereo or radio of any kind. I listen to my tunes as I’m driving around town and that’s enough for me.
I like to refer to myself as underheight instead of overweight. I’m just sure that if I could add another six or seven inches to my short 5’2 frame, I’d be much thinner. Therefore, it’s not that I overeat, it’s just that I stopped growing.
I enjoy the Hallmark commercials more than I enjoy the Hallmark movies.
Well, sorry folks, that’s about all I’ve got for you. Maybe someday soon I’ll have something really exciting to put on this page, but for now, this is me in a nutshell.
So you may be thinking I exaggerated when I say she's written a few things. But you'd be wrong. Just check out this list, baby.

IF THE SHEATH FITS

A brief overview of condom history
A question that often arises among romance authors is whether or not to have their heroes suit up. Dress the soldier. Wear a raincoat. In other words, use protection, act responsibly, practice safe sex. The condom has become one of the more debated aspects of the romance genre, especially erotic romance.
Arguments on both sides can be fierce. Many authors and readers argue that it’s irresponsible of fiction to not show characters engaging in (and presumably enjoying) safe sex. Others maintain that the romance novel is inherently a fantasy, and to interrupt the moment with mundane precautions would detract from the reader’s enjoyment. While both sides have valid points to be made, the decision gets even trickier when writing a historical romance. Condoms have been available, in one form or another, for a long, long time. Whether or not our historical heroes would have had ready access to them or any inclination to use them depends on a lot of variables: when and where the hero lives being the most important. Wealth, religion, educational level—all of these can factor in. And of course, depending on how it was made and what it was made of, the efficacy varied wildly. So to get it right, an author actually needs to know a little bit about the origins of the little foil packet.
Nobody knows exactly when the condom was invented. There are Egyptian hieroglyphics roughly 3000 years old that show a man wearing what looks like a linen sheath over his penis. Nobody is sure if this was to prevent disease or pregnancy, or just for decoration. There are rumors of the Romans using this or that for contraception, but no definite references to what could be considered a condom. Cave paintings in France dated to around 100 AD again show men wearing a colored sheath, but again, we have no idea why.
However, people have been trying to not get pregnant, for one reason or another, almost as long as others have been trying to get pregnant. And it’s just common sense to put a barrier between the sperm and the womb. So the use of homemade condoms could go back—well—as at least as long as humans have been making sausage. Given the obviousness of a length of sheep gut with a knot tied in it, it seems likely that these relatively risky versions have been used for a long, long time. Keep in mind though, that most of Europe was Catholic through the Middle Ages, and that the Catholic Church considered contraception of any kind (even withdrawal) a major sin. So while the concept may well have existed, it probably wasn’t discussed publicly or in common use.
The first written reference to what we now call a condom was by an Italian scientist named Fallopio (yes, as in Fallopian tubes) in 1564. He claimed to have “invented” a device to prevent the spread of venereal disease. The description isn’t very detailed, but apparently it was a linen sheath that fit over the glans. He actually tested it on 1100 men and none of them became infected. So the condom for disease prevention isn’t a recent phenomenon. Another doctor published something similar in 1597. From there forward, there’s a pretty clear record of condom use and innovation. They’re mentioned in a French play from 1655, maybe in the correspondence of two French noblewomen from the late 1600s and quite extensively in the memoirs of the legendary Giacomo Casanova, published in 1797. The famous lover didn’t much like them and there’s an engraving in the book of he and a friend inflating them like balloons to entertain a pair of ladies, thus starting a proud tradition carried out by high school boys to this day. The word condom dates in print to 1706, in a poem, but the origins of the word remain a mystery. Legend says that a Dr. Condom introduced them to Charles II of England as a means of preventing additional illegitimate offspring, but no support of this has ever been found, and it’s now assumed to be a myth.
By the late 1700s you could find prophylactics made of hand sewn goat, sheep, or cow intestine, tanned fish skin, oiled silk, or even very fine leather. Some covered the whole penis, others were caps or “capottes” that just covered the glans, and most had a drawstring at the base to hold them in place. Condom technology really took off in the 1800s. They had great names like cundums, French Letters, French Preservatives, Male Safes, English Armor, and “Patent Circular Protector.” Early experiments with rubber were fairly unsuccessful, until Goodyear and Hancock (separately) in about 1844 invented the vulcanization process. The new technique allowed for much more durable protection, though the resulting condoms were thicker than those made of skin. They were also designed to be washed out and reused until the rubber started to crumble. The first advertisement for rubber condoms appeared in the New York Times in 1861, so we know they were widely available by then. In 1873, the Comstock Act prohibited the sale of contraceptives by mail in the US, so for many years, they became harder to get with relative anonymity. The reservoir tip was added in 1901, and a method for making them without seams was discovered in Germany in 1912. In 1930 the latex condom was introduced, thus creating the rubber we know today.
Condom history often parallels the mores of our society. The strict moralism of America in the early 1900s led to concentrated efforts to restrict condom use. As a result, during WWI, US soldiers had the highest venereal disease rate of any country, over 70%, by some sources, and by WWII, the US military had come around and begun actively promoting safe sex. In 1949, Japan produced the first colored condoms, and lubricated rubbers debuted in the 1950s. In the 60s, polyurethane condoms were introduced, but were quickly pulled from the market because of their high rate of breakage. Spermicidal lubricant was first introduced in 1975.
The late 1960s saw a downturn in the condom business. Between the introduction of the pill and antibiotics taking the fear out of syphilis and gonorrhea, the idea of a sensation-dulling barrier lost a lot of its appeal. This turned around dramatically after the world learned about HIV in the 1980s, and the discovery that condoms dramatically reduced transmission of this incurable disease. Suddenly condoms were big business again. The wild 1990s saw the introduction of sized condoms, along with novelty products like flavors, ribs, studs, and even glow-in-the-dark rubbers. Polyurethane was reintroduced, with newer technologies solving the old issues of breakage. Condom innovations continue, as safe-sex becomes more and more a prominent social issue. And, for those with latex allergies, or who just like things old-school, be assured you can still buy condoms made of animal gut. They’re available on line or in your favorite drugstore—right next to the magnums and the ones ribbed for your pleasure.
So should we take time in a romance for our heroes to put on a condom? That question remains up to the author and the reader. But if you’re going to write it, do it right. Learn a little about the history of this marvelous invention. Make the condom fit the place, the time, and the story—and, of course, the hero.

Meet Z. Allora!
About Z.
Z. Allora recently repatriated to the South of the USA after a six year stint in China. (Talk about culture shock!) She feels it is her duty to help educate against intolerance, that is, when she's not too busy hiding under her blankets typing out stories about wicked, beautiful boys doing wicked, beautiful things to each other. She will never grow old because she refuses to grow up, perhaps the most valuable lesson she learned in her years of globetrotting with her one true love.
Why do you write Gay Erotic Romance?
I've been told it's because on the inside I'm a gay horny teenaged boy who needs to write about hot sex and rainbows with happily everafters. And while that's true, I think many of us have scars on our sexual identities. Writing erotica allows me to explore and write about the healing power of sex on our sexuality. (And it’s freaking hot…)
Why do you write?
I don't have a choice. Publishing or sharing is a choice…. writing is more like breathing. Without it I couldn't survive.
When writing, how much of each character or conflict comes from a personal place?
I would have to say most of my characters develop one or more of my traits. It makes it easier to identify with them, because I understand their motivation and it makes them more real to me.
You've traveled a bit, how does that impact your characters?
True. For the last fifteen years, I've lived out of a suitcase or overseas (Singapore, Israel & China). It's amazing but can be extremely lonely. But I do love exploring new places. I've found plot bunnies in all of the twenty-nine countries I've visited. The travel has given me the chance to enjoy different experiences, so I am able to write about them in detail. (The lady boys of Thailand, the gay couple that showed us the pyramids, the men in Suzhou's only gay club, the shopkeeper in Israel, the ruins in Cambodia, etc.)
If I hadn’t lived in China, where gay doesn't exist (openly), I may never have felt the need to share my work. One of the triggers was to see parts of Asia protest an American singer because there was a fear he would turn their young people gay. I needed to add my voice demanding for happily everafters regardless of sexual orientation.
Do you think people misinterpret your style of writing?
Yup, people who are looking for serious or realistic stories are sorely disappointed. My current writing falls into a Yaoi-style. Yaoi is a style of art and writing developed in Japan depicting homoerotic relationships and are written primarily for females by females. I find it fascinating a culture so repressed gave birth to such a genre.
I love the over-the-top characters and situations filled with angst. But be completely assured it will all end happily. My intention is to give the reader a vacation from their reality. I'm not going to fix all the evils in the world with my words but I want to provide a place where everyone gets a happy ending… (rolling my eyes…) Of course, I meant it that way…this is Stiff Rain Press!
Where did you get the idea for Zombies Ahead?
On a website I frequent another author, Ms. Ally Blue. She planted zombie seeds in my head. In the past, I have never watched an entire zombie movie. I usually stop when they begin searching for 'Brains! Brains! Brains!' I successfully ignored the beautiful zombies in my head until my joke of them not wanting brains but ejaculate took root. I couldn’t let go of the image of hot boys sucking cock to survive. My best friend teasingly pointed out the CDC (Center for Disease Control) use zombies to get people interested in making their natural disaster survival kits and there are people who hack road signs to make them zombie warnings signs. In defeat, I decided to write my zombie boys out of my head and into a short, short story…. according to one of my lovely betas this is at least a five book series.
I wrote Zombies Ahead while spending a month in a tiny German town filled with rolling hills and wineries.
The scene captured in the lovely cover art has been in my head for the past fifteen years.
Are you listening to your beta? Will this be a series?
Yes. One, you should always listen to a good beta. I thought I had the second book plotted out but one of the characters, you meet at the end of Zombies Ahead, completely hijacked book 2 (Zombies Suck). I already knew he would be my problem zombie with the issues he shared with me in October breaking my heart in the process. But his destiny changes everything. So cross your fingers Stiff Rain likes it. I know my pretties will like my next cover concept.
Z, Thank you so much for giving us a little insight into your series and how you write!

EXCERPT:
Uncle Franz was once again screaming angrily, “Kai! Kai! Get your ass up here!” There was nothing new about this because his uncle was always yelling or causing a commotion instead of doing the work that needed to be done around their small family winery. Kai looked at over fields feeling pride at what his hard work would hopefully produce. His uncle didn’t seem to care that it was almost the growing season and there was a lot to be done before the grapes could safely be brought to fruition.
“Yes, sir!” Kai shouted up to the house as he turned to hike up the hill. It was an old stone house built by his great grandfather. The Bauer’s had lived in Ostringen, Germany for generations. The rock structure was sturdy, but it was in grave need of repair. Uncle Franz had let things go for the last ten years, so small fixes turned into big overhauls.
There was a fancy car on their gravel driveway. Kai sighed. The debt collectors had probably sent reinforcements. No matter how much money he gave to their creditors, his Uncle seemed to drink it away, racking up more bills in the process. It was an uphill battle, but someone needed to take care of his younger cousin.
After his parents had died ten years ago, Kai had been sent to live with his abusive uncle. His parents had always avoided contact with the man, and now he knew why. However, his uncle and cousin were his only living relatives. The only bright spot was getting to know his little cousin better. Ulrich was a couple years younger than he was, but the kid quickly turned into his best friend. They were inseparable.
Kai washed his hands at the side of the house with the hose as he thought of what he could say in terms of damage control. Kai grimaced as he looked down and saw his clothing covered in dirt and grime from the fields. He brushed himself off as best as he could. His wet hands were turning the dirt into mud on his shirt. Maybe they would see how hard he worked and give them an extension so they could keep the tiny vineyard and house.
“You’re a mess, boy.” His uncle tried to cuff him in the back of his head as he entered the house, but the large dark skinned stranger stayed his uncle’s hand.
“Don’t lay another hand on this boy. He’s ours now.” The man’s deep voice claimed. His uncle’s eyes flashed with anger but even he wasn’t stupid enough to go against a man that big.
What? He was whose? “Excuse me. I am a mess. Should I change?” Kai looked at his furious uncle and knew there would be hell to pay later.
The fair skinned shorter man stepped forward with his hand out. The guy was so pretty he could have passed for a female in the right light. “That won’t be necessary. I’m Beau Renou.” He gave Kai a stunning smile as he shook his hand lightly.
The black man held out his hand but not before giving Uncle Franz another look of warning. “Lafayette. Nice to make your acquaintance, Kai Bauer.” The big guy squeezed Kai’s hand tight in a manly handshake that almost hurt.
“You’re not from around here.” Kai asked in English. Their German was good, but he could hear a decidedly strange accent to it.
“Definitely not.” Beau laughed and looked over at Lafayette who grinned at him before frowning at Kai’s uncle again. “We’re Americans.”
Kai thought he’d caught a break. Americans were usually pushovers for a down-on-the-luck story. “Look, the harvest isn’t for several months but with the upcoming weather predicted I know it will be a good year. Please just give us a chance.”
“A chance?” Lafayette asked in German. “A chance for what?” He looked around the dimly lit stone house.
Kai answered in English, “To pay.” He didn’t want his uncle to follow the conversation.
“No need to pay us. We are here to pay you.” Lafayette amended, “Or for you actually.”
“Huh?” Kai was lost. They were here to pay for him?
Beau’s smile lit up his face as he filled Kai in. “Your uncle agreed for you to come to America with us. We have some…work for you to do.”
The way the guy hesitated on the word ‘work’ made Kai become suspicious. “What? What work?”
Lafayette cleared his throat. “We can discuss that later…on the plane.”
Shaking his head, he stated a basic fact. “I can’t just leave.” Kai struggled to remember why. Other than his younger cousin there was nothing left here, but unpleasant memories, hard work and abuse. His uncle was awful. He had no friends. School was over, and it wasn’t like he could even afford to go to the local college. He genuinely hoped he could find a way to send Ulrich to Heidelberg University so he could have more opportunities in life.
“We paid off your uncle’s debts and gave him enough to live on.” Beau gave him more information that still didn’t tell him what they wanted with him.
“You’re going, boy.” His uncle sneered as he pointed a finger in his face. “You ungrateful cur. I got you a good job.”
Doing what? But why bother asking, he knew his Uncle had no clue. He looked at the two strangers. They seemed nice enough, but he couldn’t just pick up and go. “My younger cousin, Ulrich. I, um, can’t really leave him here.”
Lafayette glared at his uncle. “Ulrich will be fine. Your uncle promised he would not be harmed in any manner.” His German words were bitten off harshly ensuring everyone knew what he implied if things didn’t go as promised.
Ulrich’s blond head stuck out of the bedroom and said, “I will be fine. Go!” He hurried over to hug him and whisper, “It’s an opportunity for you to get out of here.”
“I don’t want to leave you.” Kai clutched tight to the only thing that made sense in his world after he lost his parents. How could he leave him behind?
“I don’t want you to go either, but you can come back for me.” He stepped back with tears streaming down his face as he bravely smiled. “Or maybe I can visit you.”
With an exchange of looks between the strangers, Lafayette started typing into his phone. Beau smiled at Ulrich and touched him on the shoulder. “Tomorrow you will be getting a computer system. Someone will be here to install it. This way the two of you can stay in touch.”
“I always wanted a computer.” His uncle said as if he would know what to do with one.
Lafayette stopped using his phone and stepped up into the man’s space. He towered over him as he spelled it out. “You will not touch it or Ulrich. You will spend the money we gave and will continue to give if our instructions are followed. If not…”
“Um, yes, sir.” Uncle cowered resentfully.
Kai had never heard his uncle so submissive. Even in town he usually played the big man although everyone knew he was just a piece of shit.
His cousin reassured him. “See you’ll still be able to keep tabs on me.” He leaned in close again and spoke in English. “Go. I can see you are supposed to go. It is how it should be. It will make things right…somehow.”
Neither of them understood Ulrich’s moments of clairvoyance, but they learned not to question its accuracy. Kai didn’t like it, but he nodded. “Okay. But we are talking every day.”
Lafayette looked up from typing into his phone. “A phone will be delivered to you as well.”
Beau batted his eyes at Lafayette before grinning, “And a few other surprises.” Turning his head, he glared at Kai’s uncle. Beau may have been smaller than Lafayette but appeared to have the ability to kick his Uncle Franz’s ass too. “We will be watching you.”
Lafayette clicked his phone off and slid it into his pocket. “Time to go.” The big man said as he was heading for the door.
“What? Already?” It was all happening so fast Kai didn’t have time to take a deep breath.
“I already gathered your stuff.” Ulrich went into their room and brought out an old duffel bag filled with his things.
“Thanks.” He grabbed his cousin tightly into a hug, not wanting to let the kid go.
When they broke apart, Beau spoke to both of them in English. “We will be coming back for Ulrich.” Not seeing any surprise in Ulrich’s eyes, he said, “But you already know that don’t you.”
Ulrich nodded once and gave Kai another brave smile. “Go now and call me.”
Without a word to his Uncle, he grabbed his bag and left the small vineyard on the hill. He left the tiny town behind the day before his nineteenth birthday. If it weren’t for leaving Ulrich behind, it would have been cause for complete celebration.

THE JOY OF WRITING OUTSIDE THE BOX
By Carol Lynne
I’ve been writing for six and a half years, published for almost six, and free to write exactly what I wanted for…six months. What? I write M/M Erotic Romance, how much farther can I go, right? Well, even in Erotic Romance there are rules that a writer must follow.
Each publisher is different, but the majority wants a happily-ever-after ending, characters who don’t cheat or anything they consider outside a normal sex-life between two people. I’ve written within these guidelines for years, and I thought I was fully expressing myself, but I had no idea what else was out there.
While speaking to a friend in the publishing business, we started to discuss our love of stories outside the normal box of romance. We decided that maybe it was time to create a publishing house that would not only allow an author to create stories with no rules attached but also embrace them. A house where brothers could fall in love with brothers and love didn’t always have to end happily. A safe place where readers could find well-edited stories of unusual couples who are as diverse as the world we are living in. Thus, Stiff Rain Press was born. With three other partners, all of whom also own a successful ebook publishing company, we created an Erotica and Taboo Erotic Romance ebook publishing house that would allow authors to spread their wings.
The biggest problem I’ve found in writing with no restrictions attached is sticking with one story long enough to finish it. I have about ten different books started because I’m like a kid in a candy store. There are so many things that I’ve wanted to explore, but previous publisher restrictions have stopped me. Well, not anymore, and boy am I loving the freedom.
I have a new brother story coming out later this month, The Westerfields of Chatham County, and I’ve promised myself that I’ll finish at least one more by the end of the year. I have another twin story, Blood Brothers, which I’m dying to work on, but, again, I know I have to stick with one at a time.
So, if you’re an author who wants to write outside the box or you’re a reader who wants to explore different avenues of erotica or taboo romance, Stiff Rain Press is the place for you.
About Carol Lynne
An avid reader for years, one day I decided to write my own brand of erotic romance. While writing my first novel, Branded by Gold, I fell in love with the M/M genre. I juggle my time between being a full-time mother and a full-time writer. With over one hundred releases, one thing is certain, I love to keep busy. Although series books are my passion, I also enjoy the occasional stand-alone title.
I love to hear from my readers. You can email me at carol@carol-lynne.net. I also have two websites http://www.carol-lynne.net and http://www.cattlevalley.net.
